AHHS/CEDL Hunter Derby Series

AHHS/CEDL brings you the Hunter Derby series which are a series of stepping stone events for riders to gain experience towards competing in the Jump Canada Hunter Classics and the International Hunter Derbies. The Athlete and Domestic Development Committee included this program to help bring the lost art of tradition and horsemanship back to the show ring. The Derby Classes in Canada and the USA were created to bring show hunters to the international level, to increase spectator, media and sponsorship interest, and to bring tradition and basic riding principles back to the sport of showing hunters.

Hunter Derbies are offered with no minimum in prize money requirement to encourage shows to develop this new breed of competition and can be held at Gold, Silver and Bronze Equine Canada rated shows.

The AHHS/CEDL Hunter Derbies are a two round hunter competition and the horses are being judged on performance, hunter pace and style, quality and substance, movement and brilliance. After each round additional points may be added with one point for each option fence jumped without major fault (maximum of four points). In addition, after round two, a maximum of 5 bonus points may be awarded by the judges to each horse/rider combination for handiness of round and brilliance of pace. This score will be announced separately and added to each rider's score.

Riders will be asked to navigate a minimum of 10 obstacles in the first round and a minimum of eight obstacles in the second round. Fence heights will be determined at each competition. It is suggested to have 2’9” for horses and ponies; 3'0" for horses and ponies; and 3’3” for horses with four option fences. Hunter Derby Courses usually consist of at least one In and Out, one Bending Line, one line with an unrelated distance, and one long approach.

Obstacles will simulate those reminiscent of the hunt field and the course should offer a variety of Derby style jumps with different appearances such as: natural post and rail, stone wall, white board fence or gate, coop, aiken, hedge, oxer, brush, logs, natural foliage. Natural obstacles such as banks and ditches are allowed.

A minimum of 12 entries, including horses tied for 12th place, must return for Round Two, if available. All riders in the Top 8 overall must ride for ribbons in order to receive prize money.

Qualifiers for points would be held in the Grand Prix Ring of each facility:

Mid Summer Classic II
Willow Grove
Hunter Derby
Rocky Mountain Classic I or III

The Jodi Costello Memorial Trophy Top will be presented to the highest placed professional at Hunter Derby Finals.
